Dr. Gueorgui Harizanov is a Bulgarian composer (of chamber, symphonic and jazz music), ethnomusicologist (with focus of research on modal and intonational features of Bulgarian traditional music) and lecturer.
He studied computer assisted sound design (Musitechnic Services Éducatifs, Montréal, Quebec – 1995-1996), jazz (BFA, Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec - 2000-2003), composition (MMus, University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada - 2005-2007) and musicology and musical art (PhD, the Bulgarian Academy of Science, Institute of Art Studies - 2008-2011).
As a composer he has worked with some of the leading Canadian contemporary ensembles such as Ensemble Aventa, ECM (Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal), and String Quartet Bozzini as well as with internationally acclaimed or emerging soloists such as Lanny Pollet (flute), Minna Re Shin (piano), Mark McGregor (flute) and Jee Yeon Ryu (piano). As a guitarist Gueorgui Harizanov has worked and recorded with some of the finest Canadian jazz musicians such as Mike Pinsonneault, Dave Turner, Christopher Smith, Guy Thouan, and Aron Doyle among others.
Over the years he has been balancing his musical involvement with teaching positions at the University of Victoria (2005-07) and numerous private art schools (since 1985 – to present), teaching guitar, theory and improvisation. Gueorgui Harizanov is also the author of the book “Harmony Analysis and Improvisation Concepts” (1998) and numerous articles in specialized journals for music at home and abroad.
